Women who appreciate menswear details married with unexpected proportions and strong silhouettes should explore fragrances in what perfumer Ilias Ermenidis calls the "blurred lines" category. "I could wear them, my wife could wear them - they are more rogue and abstract," he says. They're fresh and clean yet not overly masculine as in a sporty cologne. And they typically share lush ingredients; orange blossom, violet leaf, and lily appear frequently. But it's the addition of more unusual essences - edamame, ambergris, basil, blueberry - that makes them interesting and a bit chameleon-like. "You can get the impression of something oceanic, citrusy, or herbal," adds [perfumer David Seth] Moltz.

TAILORED SCENTS
My journey began with a crash course in perfume layering from Amee L'Anson, manager of the Jo Malone London flagship on Regent Street. Seated at a high bar, enjoying a cup of Earl Grey, I sniffed my way through the brand's 33 scents, from iconic Lime Basil & Mandarin, introduced in 1991, to the newest addition, Basil & Neroli, which smells like an English herb garden batheed in orange-blossom-scented sunshine (seriously). All the products here are designed to be layered: Blend two perfumes to make your own, or wash with one scented shower gel, smooth on another body cream, and finish with a third cologne. The options are endless - as was L'Anson's patience. When I finally decided on a combo of jammy Blackberry & Bay body cream topped with a spritz of Basil & Neroli cologne, she treated me to a hand massage using my picks. (Not a beauty editor perk! The service is complimentary at all Jo Malone shops in London.) The customization culminated with a visit to the flagship's one-of-a-kind artisan studio, where I tricked out my perfume bottle with a colored cap and had it hand-engraved with my name.
